Rams Revamp

Sustainable Fashion Earth Week

The Ask

Use sustainability research to develop and design consumer awareness and education campaigns to promote a better understanding of the importance of diverting textile waste from landfills and the potential for more circular solutions

Research on Sustainbility.

My group and I began our process by diving into the research provided by an additional Sustainability class offered at VCU. We collaborated with their projects to develop and present a plan to educate and promote the scope and purpose of an Earth Week campaign centered around sustainbility. We looked at statistics, methods and possible solutions for how our campaign will accomplish this and what are other states or cities doing to reduce landfill. From here, we were able to develop a mission and a plan that will center around several events. We then developed a slogan for our campaign- “Ram’s Revamp.”

Designing the graphics.

The next step began by utilizing our research to create effective and creative campaigns that included a tote bag design, social media posts, advertisements, and a logo to represent our proposal. We designed several creative outlets that showcase our proposal plan and focus on the details that emphasize sustainability. We created four advertisements to be posted on social media, as well as a logo design for a tote bag that can be purchased at the main pop up event.

Calander of Events.

After creating the advertisements, we focused our attention on the calendar of events and creating a week that engaged audiences while also educating the public. Our main event was centered around a pop-up shop event featuring reworked clothing made from thrifted clothing by fashion students. We reached out to thrift stores to receive donations of the clothing that is rejected according to their standards. Customers will have the options to donate to this bin to help fashion students for this campaign. During that week, we also plan to invite two guest speakers who sell their reworked items on Depop to discuss their passion behind their work and answer questions students might have. Planning the week was the most important part of the process as this will receive the most student turnout and help to showcase sustainability efforts.

The Outcome

Sustainability is one of my main passions within fashion. Throughout my college career I have learned how important eco-friendly textiles is especially within the fashion industry that produces some of the most waste every day. Not only did this project teach me more about the importance of sustainability in fashion but also engaged my interest towards event planning and campaigning. I really enjoyed using my graphic design skills to create flyers and tote bag designs, and also loved organizing a week of events.
